This isn’t just a case of the movie star blues. But the sexpot actress never shirks from this fact about her person.ĭespite Evelyn vaulting herself to icon status, her troubles are incredibly relatable and often understandable. In fact, it’s often Evelyn calling Celia out on her erasure - as well as the husbands who discover the fact - that causes most of her grief. It’s how Celia (and possibly the rest of the moviegoing public) would react to that fact that creates the central conflict of the novel. James, and realizes she is bi early on in her career. Already on her second husband (and the first one she has had the hots for), Evelyn discovers her attraction to her co-star, Celia St. It’s how the world - and those she loves - deal with that fact. Her sexuality is never at play in that sense. Evelyn being bi in and of itself, is not really the subject of conflict with herself. Throughout Evelyn’s life and the retelling of it, the term bi is used and defended. There’s a whole lot to admire and relate to in this pseudo-memoir. But when Monique meets Evelyn to presumably do an article on her dress auction for charity, her interview turns into far more than she bargained for. Evelyn (clearly a hybrid of Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, and a handful of other cinematic screen goddesses) has reached out to novice magazine writer Monique to do a write-up. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo centers on the retelling of the eponymous character’s life, a glamorous actress from the end of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

I should also note there should be a trigger warning: domestic abuse and physical violence added to the warning label on this gripping narrative. But I’m going to try to keep some of the juiciest morsels in the dark because there are some twists I really don’t want to ruin for any potential audience.
